Navies around the world have set themselves up with a very structured approach for officers to rise through the ranks and demonstrate real leadership at each tier. 

The lowest rank for a budding officer is often called a Midshipman. They are given specific tasks, watches or responsibilities around the ship with a handful of crew to command.
